After scoring a hit with a series set in the 1960s, AMC travels much further back in time for "TURN: Washington's Spies," a Revolutionary War-era drama based on the same-named Alexander Rose novel. The series goes beyond the battlefront to a conflict involving everyday men and women, taking place in a cryptic world of double agents, covert operations and code-breaking. It revolves around Abe Woodhull, a young farmer torn between loyalty to his Tory background and respect for those who fight for the Patriot cause. Living on British-occupied Long Island, Abe joins a group of his childhood friends to form what becomes known as the Culper Ring, a spy network charged with sniffing out British military strategy. Under the direction of Gen. Washington, Abe and his fellow agents help turn the war to the Continentals' favor, and their daring efforts ultimately serve as the foundation for modern espionage.

I’ve been engrossed with AMC’s Revolutionary War historical/spy drama TURN since it began airing last winter. After a few months watching it every Sunday night at 9pm I learned that the historical source material for the show’s writers is WASHINGTON’S SPIES: The Story of American’s First Spy Ring, a 2006 Simon & Schuster book I just got a copy of at my NYPL branch. It’s by Alexander Rose, a writer educated at Cambridge now living in NYC. His well-paced narrative centers around the key espionage ring of the Colonial Army, the Culper Ring, for which American officers recruited civilian agents to operate undercover, in New York City, and behind enemy lines, to gain valuable information on Tory movements and their forces in NY, CT, and NJ. One seaside town, Setauket, on Long Island, is a strategic spot, where many British troops were billeted in the homes of uneasy locals, and where Abraham Woodhull lived, one of the ring’s most important members.

Abstract: The Culper Spy Ring has fascinated historians and history buffs since the end of the American Revolution, particularly with the publication of two books by historian Morton Pennypacker in the 1930s and especially in the last seven years since the debut of the widely viewed but historically inaccurate AMC series “Turn: Washington’s Spies.” Bill Bleyer, author of George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring, published in May by The History Press, is the first analytical history of the spy ring that looks at all the different versions outlined by historians and evaluates them and attempts to separate fact from fiction. This article summarizes the major findings.
